Registering a .ie Domain

Approval conditions

For an individual residing in Ireland or an Irish person

Prerequisite:

The owner must provide proof of their name: eg. a copy of their passport or birth certificate.


If you live in the Republic of Ireland:
  • Irish passport
  • Irish driving license
  • Document from the Irish social security showing your PPS number
  • Irish birth certificate
  • Irish marriage certificate
  • Bill from an Irish utilities provider (eg: NTL, Chorus, SKY / ESB, Airtricity / Bord Gais / Eircom / Vodafone, O2, Meteor, Three - telephone bills only).

If you live in Northern Ireland:
  • British driving license with an address in Northern Ireland
  • Documentation of social security in Northern Ireland with your insurance number
  • Northern Irish birth certificate
  • Northern Irish marriage certificate
  • Utility bill for Northern Ireland (eg: SKY / Vodafone, O2, Orange, Three- telephone bills only).

Formation of the domain name:

The domain name must match one of the following forms, for example 'John Paul Smith':

Johnsmith.ie [name / surname]
Johnpaulsmith.ie [first name / middle name / surname]
John-smith.ie [name / - / surname]
John-paul-smith.ie [first name / - / middle name / - / surname]
Johnpsmith.ie [first name / initial of middle name / surname]
John-p-smith.ie [first name / - / initial of middle name / - / surname]
Jsmith.ie [first initial of first name / surname]
Jpsmith.ie [first initial of first name / Middle initial / surname]
Jp-smith.ie [first initial of first name / middle name initial / - / surname]
J-smith.ie [first initial of first name / - / surname]
J-p-smith.ie [first initial of first name / - / middle name initial / - / surname]
Paulsmith.ie [middle name / name]
Paul-smith.ie [middle name / - / name]

  • It is NOT possible to register your surname only.
  • It is NOT possible to record your first name only.
  • It is NOT possible to register nicknames.



For an Irish, English, American or European

Prerequisite:

  • The registration number is required for Irish, English or American companies.
  • For a company in another country, the certificate of registration must be provided.
  • A letter on headed paper explaining the motives on the choice for the domain name.
  • Extract from the Commercial Register.
  • Documents proving a close relationship with Ireland (copies of invoices, brochures, signed letter on headed paper from a bank manager, an accountant or an Irish institution);

Formation of the domain name:

You must respect the following rules for the formation of domain name:

  • You have the possibility to add words to the company name to make a domain name.
  • The domain name must have a strict connection to a product or a service of the company.

To mark Irish, English, American or EU:

Prerequisite:

  • A letter on headed paper explaining the motives on the choice for the domain name.
  • Copy of certificate of deposit brand.
  • Documents proving a close relationship with Ireland (copies of invoices, brochures, signed letter on headed paper from a bank manager, an accountant or an Irish institution);

Formation of the domain name

  • The domain name must correspond exactly to the trademark but can be plural and can vary regarding signs, symbols and punctuation.
